HBO has ordered a limited revival of *Girls*, the comedy Lena Dunham created and starred in. The network announced it on Tuesday, 13 October 2026. Dunham and nearly all of the original core cast will return for five episodes, a decade after the show's sixth-season finale.

Production is set to begin in 2027. Several details remain open, including a premiere date and whether Adam Driver will take part. The announcement does not name him, and his participation has not been announced.

How the Revival Was Announced

The news came through a short social video. The Nightly describes it as a parody of a video call between Dunham and her co-stars. In TheWrap's account, Dunham asks the cast whether they are free next summer, and all of them agree. Andrew Rannells says he will join as well.

The clip also jokes about the cast's age. In TheWrap's account, Dunham asks whether the show can still be called Girls, and Jemima Kirke says she is not signing up for a year-long commitment. The Nightly notes that the four lead women are now in their 30s and 40s.

AP gives Tuesday, 13 October, as the day HBO announced the revival.

Who Is Confirmed to Return

Dunham returns as Hannah, the role she played across the original run. Allison Williams plays Marnie, Jemima Kirke plays Jessa and Zosia Mamet plays Shoshanna. Andrew Rannells is also returning, reprising his role as Elijah, according to Variety's Australian edition.

AP describes the return as including nearly all of the show's core cast. Variety's Australian edition also lists Williams, Kirke, Mamet and Rannells as co-executive producers on the revival.

Williams has appeared in films including Get Out and two M3GAN movies, according to AP. AP also notes that Dunham directed the 2022 film Catherine Called Birdy and co-created the series Camping and Too Much after the original run.

Dunham's Stated Reason for Coming Back

In her statement, Dunham said the show would return only for a specific story it was burning to tell. She said she had missed the characters but for a long time could not picture them in the present day, until around her fortieth birthday.

According to Variety's Australian edition, the characters began speaking to her around that birthday. The Nightly quotes her saying it is rare to get the chance to return to something that changed your life, with the gift of hindsight. Variety's Australian edition quotes her calling HBO “our friends” and praising the people who have continued to discover the show.

Amy Gravitt, EVP and head of HBO and HBO Max comedy programming, said the series would explore the shift from the characters' twenties to turning 40, according to Variety's Australian edition.

Credits and the 2027 Production Window

The revival is a five-episode order with a 2027 start and no premiere date yet. Judd Apatow returns as an executive producer for Apatow Productions. Dunham, Ilene S. Landress and Michael P. Cohen of Good Thing Going are also listed as executive producers, according to Variety's Australian edition.

Production starts in 2027. TheWrap gives the start as summer 2027, while AP and Variety's Australian edition give only the year. Variety's Australian edition describes production beginning in 2027, a decade after the Season 6 finale. A premiere date has not been announced. The Nightly reports that it is not confirmed whether the five episodes will air in 2027 or the year after.

AP reports that the revival is among the first production announcements HBO has made since its parent company Warner Bros. Discovery was taken over by Skydance-owned Paramount.

“The revival is a five-episode order with a 2027 start and no premiere date yet.”

What Has Not Been Announced

Adam Driver is not mentioned in the announcement. AP notes that he was the biggest star the show spawned, and that he went on to star in a Star Wars trilogy and has been nominated for two Oscars. TheWrap reports there is no word on whether he will appear, and his participation has not been announced.

The Nightly and TheWrap list Christopher Abbott and Alex Karpovsky as not confirmed. Variety's Australian edition names both only in its list of other original cast members, along with Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Jake Lacy, without saying whether they are involved.

Jenni Konner, who was an executive producer and co-showrunner on the original series, is not part of the announcement. TheWrap reports that she will not return, and Variety's Australian edition says she is not named in HBO's press release. TheWrap also notes that Dunham served as co-showrunner with Konner on the original series.

What the Revival Means for Dunham and HBO

For Dunham, the revival returns her to the series she created and starred in. AP describes her as the show's creator and star, and Variety's Australian edition lists her as an executive producer on the new run. The Nightly describes the original series as HBO's comedy about twenty-somethings in 2010s New York.

The original series premiered on HBO in 2012 and ran six seasons, until 2017. AP reports that it was nominated for 19 Emmys and won two. TheWrap says one of the wins was Outstanding Casting for a Comedy Series. Variety's Australian edition includes the show in its 2023 list of the greatest TV shows of all time.

AP describes the show as both praised and criticized for its portrayal of millennial women in New York, and says its popularity has grown since, especially among younger viewers. The Nightly says the show launched the careers of Driver and Abbott.

For HBO, the project adds a returning comedy with nearly all of its original core cast to its 2027 production plans. The order is a limited run of five episodes, and the premiere date is among the details still to be announced. The confirmed points are the five-episode run, the returning cast and a 2027 production start.
