Universal's horror film Other Mommy opened at No. 1 in North America over the weekend of Oct. 9-11, 2026, with an estimated $27.5 million from 3,365 theaters, the Associated Press reported. Aaron Sorkin's The Social Reckoning debuted at No. 5 with an estimated $5.5 million from 2,606 theaters.

These are studio estimates covering Friday to Sunday, and the sources differ on several figures. As of Oct. 12, 2026, The Numbers' weekend chart for the same dates lists The Social Reckoning at $5.33 million, slightly below the estimate.

Other Mommy's opening against a $19 million budget

Rotten Tomatoes says Atomic Monster productions teamed with Blumhouse to deliver Other Mommy, and AP calls it a Jessica Chastain horror. AP reported a production budget of around $19 million, and the domestic opening is above that figure. The film also opened in 50 international markets, for a global debut of $45.2 million, according to AP. Rotten Tomatoes reports worldwide business of about $45 million.

The sources do not report marketing costs, distribution terms or net profit. Rotten Tomatoes' commentary says the film is "already headed well into profit territory" with $45 million globally. They do show low critical approval. Rotten Tomatoes lists critics' approval at 19 percent and says Universal was reluctant to screen the film in advance for press. The site also reports that the opening is the highest on record for a film with a D+ CinemaScore, ahead of Alexander at $13.68 million.

Rotten Tomatoes also ranks the opening as the fourth-best horror opening of the year, behind Backrooms ($81.4 million), Scream 7 ($63.6 million) and Resident Evil ($60.1 million). Universal's head of domestic distribution, Jim Orr, said "everybody turned out for it." AP reports the audience was split evenly by gender and that about two-thirds were aged 18 to 34.

A weaker start for The Social Reckoning and the holdovers

The Social Reckoning received a B- CinemaScore, according to AP, and its production cost was reported at around $30 million, not including marketing. AP calls the film a Sony Pictures release. Rotten Tomatoes lists the film at 54 percent on the Tomatometer and does not state a budget or distributor for it.

Heart of the Beast, a Brad Pitt survival thriller, took No. 4 with $7.1 million, and The Social Reckoning placed below it. Rotten Tomatoes' text gives $6.9 million for that film's weekend three and its chart gives $7.1 million for this weekend, and it lists an $85 million budget. No other budget for The Social Reckoning appears in the pages read here.

Verity held at No. 2 with an estimated $11.5 million, down 64 percent from its opening weekend, AP reported. Rotten Tomatoes puts its weekend gross at $14.2 million in the text and $11.4 million in its chart, with a total of $53.8 million after 10 days and a projected domestic final of $72 million to $82 million. Resident Evil was third with $8.4 million, while The Numbers' chart lists it at $8.55 million. The Numbers puts the total for all 31 reporting films at about $83.2 million.

Two openings, two different kinds of release

The two films are different kinds of releases, and the sources do not compare them directly on audience appetite. The weekend shows one horror film with a D+ grade drawing a large opening, and one Aaron Sorkin film with a B- grade opening at a much lower figure.

AP quotes Paul Dergarabedian, identified as Rentrak's head of marketplace trends, saying, "You don't always know what's going to connect with audiences." AP reports that he also said October is a time when studios take chances and that it doesn't always work out.

The reports do not address awards consequences for either film. AP says the film received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics.

“The two films are different kinds of releases, and the sources do not compare them directly on audience appetite.”

What the sources leave open

These weekend figures are studio estimates, and AP says final domestic figures will be released on Monday. The Numbers' chart does not list distributors for any film. The Rotten Tomatoes page names no distributor for The Social Reckoning, while AP calls it a Sony Pictures release.

Other Mommy's second-weekend results are not yet reported in these sources, and they give only opening-weekend totals for it. Rotten Tomatoes gives Verity's weekend gross as $14.2 million in its text and $11.4 million in its chart. AP gives $11.5 million, so the figures should be checked before they are repeated.
