Soderbergh Will Help Complete The Batman Part II Shoot; Reeves Remains Writer-Director

Steven Soderbergh will help complete the final weeks of The Batman Part II shoot, with Matt Reeves still writer-director, the studios said on 15 October 2026.

Steven Soderbergh will step in to help complete the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part II, the studios said on 15 October 2026. Matt Reeves, the film's writer-director, remains in that role while he attends to an ongoing family matter. Soderbergh approached Reeves as an admirer of his work.

The shoot had been paused on 5 October, when DC Studios described the break as temporary. The reports give its release date as 18 February 2028.

The Shift Since the 5 October Pause

DC Studios announced the pause on 5 October, saying production had been temporarily halted while Reeves focused on a family matter. Deadline reported the pause, and the studio said Reeves 'has the full support of DC Studios.' The AV Club's pause report puts the start of the London shoot in July, while a later AV Club report says principal photography began there in June. That later report also says the shoot had been unpaused, citing Deadline, and that Soderbergh was brought in.

The new element is Soderbergh's involvement, and Reeves remains in charge of the film. Soderbergh praised Reeves's work on the first film and said the goal is footage that fits with what has already been shot. Reeves wrote on X that he is 'not leaving The Batman Part II,' and he thanked Soderbergh for helping him finish principal photography. TheWrap says Warner Bros. issued the main statement, while AV Club says DC Studios issued it.

Who Holds the Cut

The announcements describe a shared arrangement. Soderbergh works on the remaining shoot with the actors and crew, and Reeves returns to finish the film in post-production, according to DC Studios as reported by AV Club.

The statements name who is helping, but not who holds final cut. TheWrap lists the producers as Dylan Clark, Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn and Peter Safran, with Gunn and Safran identified as heads of DC Films.

Robert Pattinson returns as Batman, joined by Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan. Michael Giacchino returns as composer, and Erik Messerschmidt replaces Greig Fraser as cinematographer, according to TheWrap.

Release Date and the Studio Structure

Variety reports that the film was announced at CinemaCon 2022 and first set for 2 October 2026. Warner Bros. later moved it to 1 October 2027, and Variety says it was pushed again in June to February 2028. TheWrap and AV Club both give the current date as 18 February 2028. AV Club, citing Deadline's sources, says it is too early to say whether the pause will move that date.

The film is being completed while Paramount Skydance's acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery was unresolved in July. ComicBookMovie reported on 25 July 2026 that the $111 billion merger was on hold. Under the agreed hold, Paramount would not move forward until legal challenges are resolved or 1 June 2027, whichever comes first. The challenges come from state plaintiffs, who allege reduced competition in theatrical distribution and cable licensing, and from the Writers Guild of America, which says the merger will lower compensation and worsen deal terms. Paramount's spokesperson says the agreement gives a direct route to trial.

A temporary restraining order barring Paramount from closing was extended to 18 August at the earliest, according to that report. The report also says that if the deal is not finalized by 30 September, Warner Bros. shareholders are owed about $650 million per quarter.

What Happens Next

The studio statement says Soderbergh and Reeves will work closely together to finish the final weeks of principal photography. Soderbergh has said the footage is meant to let Reeves finish his film. TheWrap gives the first film's worldwide gross as $772.3 million.

AV Club says it is not clear how much work remains on the initial shoot.
