Red Carpet
How Vintage Archives Became Red Carpet Suppliers
At the 2026 Venice Film Festival, decades-old gowns outshone new ones. A small network of dealers and archivists supplied them, and awards season is next.

At the 83rd Venice Film Festival, held September 2 to 12 on the Lido di Venezia, some of the most discussed looks on the red carpet were decades old. Kendall Jenner wore an archival Giorgio Armani gown to a September 3 screening. That same day, Sydney Sweeney arrived at an Armani Beauty dinner in a Fall/Winter 2000 Armani design sourced through the vintage dealer Raffe Vintage.
Coverage of the 11-day festival did not agree on what the overall mood added up to. Some outlets described a muted, black-and-white red carpet built around restraint. Others pointed to the archival dresses as the standout thread of the festival. Either way, the dealers, archivists and rental studios that supplied those pieces are largely the same ones stylists are expected to call on through the rest of the fall and winter awards calendar.
A Muted Carpet, With Exceptions
The Wrap characterized the 83rd festival's red carpet as leaning toward subdued, elegant styling rather than showstopping fashion. It cited jury president Maggie Gyllenhaal, who mixed custom Balenciaga couture with Chloé pieces, and a black-and-white minimalism that showed up on Phoebe Waller-Bridge, in a white blouse and black trousers by Michael Rider for Celine, and on the Mara sisters, in archival and custom monochrome looks. Mariana di Girolamo wore a custom white Chanel off-the-shoulder top with a drop-waist lace skirt.
Against that restraint, the archival pieces stood out. Laura Dern wore a 1950s-inspired candy-pink Prada gown with a "scoop neckline, cap sleeves, a full circular midi-skirt," according to Tatler Asia. Irina Shayk appeared in a vintage Dolce & Gabbana design from the spring 2003 collection and, separately, in an archival Givenchy piece from fall 2015. Of Sweeney's Armani gown, one report noted that despite debuting 26 years earlier, "its simple shape and silver finish still felt current."
The Dealers Who Supply the Archive
Sweeney's Armani gown did not come from Giorgio Armani's own showroom. Her Fall/Winter 2000 dress was sourced through Raffe Vintage, one of a handful of businesses that stylists now treat as a standing supply line for red carpet dressing rather than a one-off find.
Los Angeles-based Tab Vintage, founded in 2019 by Alexis Novak, built its client list partly through Instagram during the pandemic. Novak has sourced a red-velvet Thierry Mugler gown from the house's Fall/Winter 1998 "Lingerie Revisited" collection, tracked down through a collector in France, that Hailey Bieber wore for her 27th birthday, and the look Laverne Cox wore to the 2024 Emmy Awards.
Lidow Archive, run by Haile Lidow out of a Los Angeles studio, rents from a collection of more than 8,000 vintage and contemporary pieces, with a $250 minimum. In downtown Manhattan, Chandler Guttersen's Vintage Grace grew out of inventory she acquired in spring 2021 from a closing Palm Beach vintage store; her clients include Dakota Johnson, Chloe Fineman and Justine Skye, and stylist Law Roach, who dresses Zendaya and Ariana Grande, has sourced from her collection. Aralda Vintage, founded by Brynn Jones, supplied the 1959 Christian Dior gown Bella Hadid wore on a past red carpet. Johnny Valencia's Pechuga Vintage keeps strict condition standards — a single snag can disqualify a piece from being lent — and has placed pieces including a Versace bustier Kourtney Kardashian wore to her Las Vegas wedding. Gabriel Held, described by Vogue as "Instagram's foremost fashion historian," began collecting Galliano-era Dior pieces around the time Galliano left Christian Dior and counts clients from Paris Hilton to Lil' Kim.
What Stylists Actually Make on These Looks
Dressing a star in an archival piece for a major red carpet can still run at a loss for the stylist. According to a 2018 report by Fashion Week Daily, studios typically paid stylists around $1,000 per look during awards season, while expenses — shipping, tailoring and paying assistants — could run $1,500 to $2,000 per look. Stylist Jeanne Yang told the outlet: "we typically get paid about $1,000 per look. Then we deduct our expenses...and it costs up to $1,500 to $2,000 per look." Other stylists quoted in the same report, including Law Roach and Jason Bolden, described losing money on awards-season assignments as close to routine.
Those figures are several years old, and current per-look rates for a specific red carpet appearance are not published on a regular basis. More broadly, the median salary for a celebrity fashion stylist in the United States was $129,385 a year as of September 1, 2026, according to Salary.com, with most professionals earning between roughly $119,000 and $140,000.

Why Dealers Say Demand Is Rising
Guttersen described the appeal of archival pieces as a way to stand apart. "There's a lot of sameness out there," she said. "Personal style is pivoting from everyone wanting to look the same...to more individuality." She has also described her own attachment to certain rare finds, including two suits from a past Balenciaga collection she keeps for herself, to wear "if there's ever an event or occasion where I need to feel my best."
Other dealers pointed to a market shifting away from instantly recognizable logos toward rarer, harder-to-place pieces. The founders of Isle of Monday, Janelle Gray-Gilbert and Gabriella Carota, said demand for a specific archival piece tends to surge when a brand's current collections are drawing attention on their own. Held said he prefers working with stylists who arrive already knowing a garment's history: "I love working with someone who knows her references and has done her research."
What Comes Next on the Calendar
The Academy's Governors Awards, where honorary Oscars go this year to Glenn Close, Floyd Norman, Ridley Scott, and Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler, are set for November 15 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Ovation Hollywood. The Golden Globes follow on January 10, 2027, with Nikki Glaser hosting for a third consecutive year. The 99th Academy Awards are scheduled for March 14, 2027, at the Dolby Theatre.
Each of those events draws on the same pool of stylists and the same archives that dressed the Venice red carpet. Whether Venice's particular balance of restraint and archival drama repeats at those shows, or whether one register wins out over the other, is not settled by the coverage of Venice itself — accounts of the festival did not agree on which read the strongest.
